Penny Ewing Such an emotional track. You can hear so much soul behind that angel voice. Mesmerizing.

about

The souls that throng the flood
Are those to whom, by fate, are other bodies ow'd:
In Lethe's lake they long oblivion taste,
Of future life secure, forgetful of the past.

Forgetting is the third release from indie rock band Dogwood Lung. Its sonic designs develop and scatter across songs of reflection, self-becoming, mortification, and love. Rose Ewing's voice captivates and transports the listener to a place disembellished of distraction, where without the habitual forms of life we let go of the self we can no longer stand to be.

Skin Against Carpet:

The windows of my car are open,
to let the smoke sink in my lungs
and go out to the night sky

It lets my head get lost for a while.

As I move my arms and legs they tingle,
making my body feel like it is electrified.

It lets my head get lost for a while,

but I can't think of you for more than a couple of seconds
and I can’t think of me for more than a couple of seconds.

As I look in the mirror, I see my eyes staring back at me.
It’s surreal to know that sack of flesh holds my consciousness.
It’s surreal to know that sack of flesh moves me.

I feel my feet slipping through the floorboards
as the carpet gently caresses my body.

You can find me tied to a drum
cause it keeps me steady,
and you can find me swaying to a song
cause it keeps me breathing.

Blush:

I have an itch to be painted red
it is glowing
it is all that you’ll see
I have an itch to be painted red
it is glowing
it is all that you’ll see of me
It is all that will be left of me
it is all that will be left

I feel loose
there is a looseness in my wrists
when I move them
they follow with your breath
I feel like loose
there is a looseness in my wrists
when I move them
they follow with your breath
and i will not be embarrassed
I will not be embarrassed
it is all that will be left
and i will not be embarrassed
I will not be embarrassed
I will not be embarrassed
it is all that will be left
and I will not be embarrassed

Waiting:

There are lines on the ceiling, there are lines on my face, from the shadow of the fan spinning.
There smudges on the walls, there are stains on the floor.
It looks filthy here. I feel filthy.

I don’t know what to say to make you feel alright.
I don’t know how to wipe the expression off of your face.
I was hoping to make things better, but I think I made it worse.
Now we’re sitting staring blankly,
waiting for nothing

I don’t wanna go out tonight,
I don’t wanna stay out late.
I won’t have anything good to say,
I’ll second guess everything and wait.

Just waiting for nothing
I am waiting
Just waiting for nothing
I am waiting

I wanna go far, far away sometimes,
see something new, where no one knows my name.
I wanna get out of myself, but I am waiting for nothing,
Just waiting.

Golden One:

Low--low--low our heads hang down
low--low--low our heads hang,
watching our shoes shifting, comfortably swaying,
our lips sipping something sweet.

but there’s a pain in my chest,
that makes me forget everything that I know.
I embarrass myself,
and you say let's go home and sleep it off.
You curl up with me, and whisper in my ear
of what we are and what we’re gonna be,
of how we’ll go to where it snows,
where it snows every day
It’ll snow, it’ll snow every day
It’ll snow, it’ll snow every day
It’ll snow, it’ll snow every day

Low--low--low to the soil sifting through our fingers,
as the sun beats down on our necks.
You’re sweet on my lips golden one,
You are sweet on my lips.
You’re sweet on my lips golden one,
You are sweet on my lips.

Paintings on a Wall:

Put your hands on my skin,
flesh that itches will not surrender to anyone.
Break my mind in two pieces so I can see what I am,
there is a part of me I do not know or understand.

I am blue
where I cannot see --I cannot say
I am blue
where i cannot see --I cannot say.

Expose all of me,
plaster my body on a wall,
for people to pass and see
color dripping down over me.

this is what we are,
this is what we choose to be
this is what we are,
this is what we choose to be

Bend arms back around your neck
clench fists until blood
rushes up to your head
dig your heels into the ground
drained of life
drained of time that stands still
stealing feelings from
what is left of us

this is all we are,
this is all we have to be
this is all we are,
this is all we have to be

I am blue
where I cannot see --I cannot say
I am blue
where I cannot see --I cannot say
